Background: Glass fibres are often used to reinforce thermoplastic and thermoset material. An important factor in the successful employment of such materials is the interaction at the glass-polymer interface. The nature of both the substrate and the coupling agent, determines how well the interface may be characterized.Diffusion and subsequent reaction of water at the filler-polymer interface is responsible for the resultant possible delamination. The silane coupling agents, however, are thought to generate water resistant interface between the organic polymer and inorganic substrate. These coupling agents are able to react or interact, with both the glass surface and the polymer. It has been established that if only a small amount of coupling agents is added, the overall performance of the resultant composite will be improved. -Aim: The aim of the project is to develop a polymeric silane coupling agent suitable for the surface modification process of E-glass fibres and give the composite the wanted surface properties. In this project we have focused the investigation on the adsorption of several silane coupling agents on glass fibre surface. The effect of different surface treatments on the surface charge of the fibres as well as on the adsorption of the surfactants are investigated on a macroscopic and on a molecular level with different techniques. -Work in progress: In this project we have been studying the adsorption process of the silane coupling agents first from water. However, the surface treatment in aqueous environment is restricted by the hydrolysis of the formed bindings. This occured hydrolysis weakens the bindings or could even breal them down. Therefore the surface treatments are more commonly performed in organic environments. As a benefit we get a well established adsorption which can be strenghtned by warming the system. We have been analyzing the surface treated fibre surfaces both on the macroscopic and molecular level. As analyzing the surface treated fibre surfaces both on the macroscopic and molecular level. As analyzing instruments we have been using XPS, DRIFT, TGA.Streaming potential and SEM.
